The majority of UK electorate would agree that the British troops do a fantastic job fighting to protect a democratic way of life.  It is heart-Battlefield, soldiersrending when they are, accused of war crimes, long after whatever conflict, was over.

But, according to the media report, the Prime Minister will take the UK out of the section of the European Convention on Human Rights when armed forces are on the battlefield.  A move she believes will prevent so-called tank chasing lawyers from suing the Ministry of Defence.

Apparently, this decision his taken, following the various legal cases filed against soldiers from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflict.  The logic in opting out of the ECHR is to ensure that British troop can undertake their duties without the fear of being sued.

It is important that we support the men and women who fight in wars, putting their life on the line.  However, even in conflict, there must be a standard of humanity that must be maintained by all involve and if our troops go beyond the scope of their duties they should be held accountable.

Some of the horror stories that came out of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, atrocities that alleged, that were undertaken by British soldiers against human beings, should and must be investigated.  You cannot say that because we are fighting a war then, anything goes, if that is the case why would we prosecute anyone for war crimes.

There is no doubt that there are those who will use the conflict for their personal gains, they will use lies and innuendoes to achieve their aims. But, the Ministry of Defence should be able to determine when a claim is truthful or fraudulent.   If they are not able to do so and the only way to prevent these frivolous allegations against soldiers, is by opting out of the European Convention on Human Rights, then it is a sad day for the UK and quite frankly puts the country back into the dark ages.
