Labour leader says they would purchase 8,000 homes for rough sleepers

Labour leader

In an interview with the Andrew Marr programme, according to a media article, the Labour leader states that if his party got into power, they would immediately purchase 8,000 homes across England to tackle the current homeless crisis.

Mr Corbyn also suggests that the homeless crisis in the UK was, disgraceful and unnecessary. There are over 4,000 people currently living on the streets. He also states that his government would give local authorities the power to take over deliberately kept vacant properties.

I believe that the UK electorate will no doubt recognise that the Conservative government is inept when it comes to the NHS, homelessness, the welfare system, and catering for the needs of the country and its people.

In my opinion, the suggestion that the Conservative are putting in place plans to tackle homelessness is a futile attempt to make it appear they are doing anything constructive for those sleeping rough. Given that the number of children in hostels and temporary accommodation has risen by 70 percent to over 120,000. The number of people sleeping rough has increased by 73 percent in the past three years.

The Conservative government is more concerned with Brexit. We have to recognise that although a few wealthy people may be affected by the UK leaving the EU, the vast majority of people that will lose out are those already poverty-stricken, destitute, children and those that are already vulnerable.

I have no doubts that Brexit will destroy the economy of the UK, there will be a massive rise in unemployment, more people trying to claim benefit, small businesses will suffer tremendously, and in the long-term, the UK will be set back 50 years into the past. It is the legacy that this haphazard, patchwork Conservative government will leave for the next generation.
