According to a media report, the number of people sleeping rough in the Capital is disgraceful, so much so that an MP is putting forward a private member’s bill that will force Councils to provide temporary accommodation within 56 days, for those eligible.

The report further suggests that over 8,000 individuals slept rough in London between 2015/16, and that was an increased of seven percent.  It also doubles the number of those sleeping rough between 2010/11.

Homeless, people
Homeless people sleeping at streetside in city.

In my opinion, if this bill, were passed it would put the onus on Council officers to find accommodation for anyone who could become homeless within 56 days and have to bring them in temporary housing for another 56 days. However, what would be, required from central government is extra funding for local Councils to be able to fulfil this requirement.

The situation comes as no surprise to people living in the Capital how have to pass these people sleeping in the doorways of banks, under bridges, entrance to subway stations and just about anywhere they can lay their heads.

In a so-called G7 country where according to a Conservative MP there is virtually full employment, there are people still sleeping on the streets.  He also commented that, if this situation cannot be fixed, when the economy is buoyant, what would happen if we hit a recession.

On the other side of this deplorable and inhuman situation is the Councils.   Complaining that they do not have enough resources to cope with the problems and the priority for housing is single mothers, fathers, people with mental health issues, domestic violence victims and those coming out of the arm forces go in front of any other group.
