For rulers are not a terror to good works, but the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath but also for conscience sake. For this cause, pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render, therefore to all their dues: a tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
As documented in Romans 13, 1-7, God gave politicians a code to live by serving the people and the people obligations to the politicians. Both the politicians and the people will face the consequences should they break the covenant they should abide by. Therefore, when individuals choose to involve themselves in the political arena, they say they will be carrying out God’s work for the people.

Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, thy poor, and thy needy, in thy land.
Therefore, brethren, no one should be poor or needy because we elect our politicians to ensure the people are taking care of. When politicians choose to ignore God’s wishes and allow poverty, homelessness, diseases, hunger, and all society’s failings, they will have to answer to the Almighty.
