When our faith is tested, how does the Bible teach us to restore our Faith? The Bible has much to say about restoring faith when it’s tested. Here are a few core principles and examples that speak to how faith can be renewed:
Remember God’s Faithfulness (Reflect on the Past)
The Bible often encourages people to remember how God has acted in the past.
Psalm 77:11-12 I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will also meditate on all thy work and talk of thy doings. When our faith wavers, looking back on times when God came through can reignite hope and trust.
Be Honest With God (Bring Your Doubts)
God isn’t afraid of our questions or doubts. Many faithful people in Scripture expressed their struggles openly. Mark 9:2424 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
Psalm 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Honest prayer is a step toward restoration. God meets us in our vulnerability.
Immerse Yourself in the Word
The Word of God nourishes faith. When you feel far from God, going back to Scripture is like water for dry ground. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Stay in Community
Isolation can weaken faith, but community strengthens it. Other believers can help carry your burdens and remind you of God’s promises. Hebrews 10:24-25 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Wait with Hope
Faith isn’t always restored instantly—it’s often a process of waiting and trusting in the dark. Isaiah 40:3131 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. God often deepens our faith through the very process of testing.
Focus on Jesus
Ultimately, restoring our faith means fixing our eyes on Jesus, the anchor of our souls. Hebrews 12:22 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
A Short Prayer for When Faith is Fading
“Lord, I believe—help my unbelief. When I feel distant, draw me close.
When I doubt, remind me of Your promises. Strengthen what is weak in me, and renew my spirit. Help me to trust, even when I don’t understand. Thank you for your love that never fails, even when mine does. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
A Simple Bible Reading Plan for Times of Doubt
Day 1 – Psalm 73:28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.
Day 2 – John 20:29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Day 3 – Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Day 4 – Habakkuk 1:1-3 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise strife and contention.
Day 5 – 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
